Let us take a look at some of the most notable and most destructive computer viruses throughout history. Luckily, we have
this timeline from HP.com that shows some of the most devastating computer viruses of all time including information about what the damage would be in today’s dollars. Although it is difficult to show just how much damage a computer virus causes monetarily; this graph does a good job showing just how much they are estimated to have cost. One of the most notable ones from the list called, Code Red , was released in the year 2001. It actually infiltrated its way all the way up to the White House which led them to have to change their entire IP address. Code Red caused over 2.4 billion dollars in damage at that time, over 3.7 billion in today's dollars. I guess the early 2000's was a hot year for computer viruses because ILOVEYOU was also released in Y2k and caused major havoc by replicating to entire contact lists if someone opened the attachment and causing over 24 billion dollars in damage in today's money.
