35 Soups from Around the World

Did you know that the earliest record of soup making dates back to 20,000 BC China? Bouillon cubes were around in the 17th century and are still used in soup making today. In fact, it was during the 17th century that the word 'soup' started to be commonly used. In the US the first cookbook that contained recipes for different soups was printed in 1742. Campbell Soup Company sold their first can of commercially available condensed soup in 1897. Soup can be made from limitless ingredients and countless combinations. Depending on where you are in the world, there are many different types of soup that are well known in that region. This chart from How To Cook Recipes shows 35 different types of soups and stews from all over the world. In France you may see a Bouillabaisse on the menu which is a spicy peppery soup with at least three different kinds of fish. In Indonesia you may be offered the Soto ayam which is made with tumeric-infused broth, chicken, rice noodles and boiled rice cake. In Italy you would have to try the traditional wedding soup made with ground beef, pork meatballs, carrots, onions, celery, garlic and orzo pasta. Yum!
