Facebook began in a Harvard dorm room in 2004 by a 19-year-old Mark Zuckerberg. In its short 16 years in business, Facebook has become a powerhouse among tech giants. It has become one of the biggest websites in the world visited by 400 million people a month. Even though a rocky start and many lawsuits the company has continued its rise to become one of the world's most successful brands. Some of the bigger names you should recognize that are now Facebook-owned companies are; Instagram which was purchased for $1 billion dollars in 2014, WhatsApp for $19 billion dollars in 2014, Oculus the virtual reality technology, for $2 billion also in 2014. The latest public acquisition was in September 2019 when Facebook purchased CTRL Labs which is a technology that translates movement and neural impulses into digital signals. That purchase was reportedly between $500 million and $1 billion.
