From heart disease to homicide, the NYRequirements.com researchers looked at data to determine which states have the most life years lost before age 75 per 100,000 people around the country.
Mississippi came in first with 13,781 life years lost per 100,000 people in 2020. The top cause of premature death in Mississippi that year was heart disease. An estimated 30 million people around the United States have heart diseases, and it causes one out of every four deaths in the country.
The state with the fewest life years lost before age 75 is Hawaii. In 2020, there were just 6,413 life years lost per 100,000. The leading cause of premature death in Hawaii is malignant neoplasms, which are abnormal masses of tissue in the body.
