Swimsuit fashion has definitely seen some significant changes throughout history. From the modest full-length bathing dresses with pants in the 1800s to the modern-day bikinis, swimwear styles continuously evolve, much like regular clothing. Throughout history, numerous iconic swimwear styles have left their mark and shaped the current trends in bathing suit fashion. The team at Lulus delved deep into the history of swimwear to visualize the evolution of swimsuit styles over the years. One of the most notable moments in swimwear history took place in 1946 with the introduction of the bikini. While variations of bikini-like swimwear had existed for centuries, the modern bikini revolutionized the industry. In May 1946, French designer Jacques Heim debuted a two-piece swim garment called the Atome, followed shortly after in July 1946 by Louis Réard, who created a swimsuit he named the bikini. Réard derived the name from Bikini Atoll, a coral reef in the Marshall Islands. Although Heim's version was the first to be worn, the name "bikini" ultimately became the widely recognized term.
