The 9/11 terrorist attack was one of the deadliest attacks on American soil and took the lives of 2,977 victims. A majority of these victims were civilians that were in the Pentagon, the World Trade Center and surrounding areas, or were passengers on the four airplanes. How many of the victims were first responders that arrived on the scene to help? This infographic breaks down the fatalities from the attack into those from the FDNY, law enforcement officers, EMS, and even the armed forces that were lost at the Pentagon; and then even further into the ranks of those that were lost.

As if the massive amount of fatalities caused by the attacks weren’t bad enough, almost as many lives have been lost in the two decades since the attack from 9/11-related illnesses. The toxic dust caused by the towers collapsing caused a wide variety of health issues such as various types of cancer, respiratory issues, aerodigestive and musculoskeletal disorders, as well as leading to mental health issues among the survivors.
