In the United States, cigarette smoking is a very serious problem. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there are more than 480,000 smoking deaths each year. Because of this, it's the leading cause of preventable death and disease in America. It's estimated that 34.2 million Americans are smokers, which accounts for more than 13% of the country's adult population. Smoking rates in the United States have declined by close to 21% since 2005, but smoking rates among cities and states can still vary.
According to the data, it's Detroit, Michigan that has the highest rate, as 29.2% of the adult population there smokes cigarettes. Also of note is that five of the top ten cities are all located in Ohio. This infographic from Parker Waichman analyzes data from the CDC's 500 Cities project to determine which cities across America have the highest percentages of smokers. Did your home city make the list?
