Science might well be a Man’s territory but there have been some notable female names in the aegis of space science who have contributed hugely to the research and development on this particular branch of science.
The first female cosmonaut to go to space was notably the Russian born lady, Valentine Tereshkova. She was selected from among 400 strong applications to become one of the five finalists who would be piloting the Vostok 6 in June 1963.
She initially worked as a textile factory and had always been an avid skydiver and it was probably this that counted in her favour while been shortlisted as the first women flying out to space from the Soviets.
