Every year 5,067 trucks are involved in fatal accidents. Of all the fatalities that occurred, 56.3% happened in single vehicle crashes. Because of truck accidents, 362 pedestrians and 87 cyclists are killed each year. In US, the states which had the most truck accidents between 2004 and 2008 are Texas, California and Florida. The accidents ranged between 299 and 483.
Another disturbing fact is two-third of all fatal accidents happen in the rural areas and that too in broad daylight. And most of the fatal accidents happened in the month February which is 402 while March recorded the least number of accidents with 297.
And these accidents wouldn't have happened if the drivers were either not in wrong lane or not drunk. 3.1% of truck drivers involved were drunk and driving while 10.9% were not in the correct lane. The other causes are driving too fast, using cell phone while driving, substance abuse etc.
