A Timeline of the World’s Largest Passenger Ships From 1831-Present

When's the last time that you were on a cruise ship? With this infographic, HMY.com takes a closer look at what the largest passenger ships are, dating all the way back to 1831. It was in 1831 that SS Royal William set out from the United Kingdom, and was named the largest passenger ship on earth. It was 49 meters long and could hold more than 155 passengers, and would hold the title of the largest passenger ship until 1837 when it was dethroned by another ship from the United Kingdom: the SS Great Western.

This infographic spans nearly 200 years and includes 43 different ships, with the majority coming from the United Kingdom (21). Other places that are well represented into the Bahamas, who is home to six of the last seven-passenger ships to be named the largest in the world.
