The tradition of using a themed tree was started by Lady Jacqueline Kennedy, in the year 1961. She used nutcrackers for decoration that year.
In 2012, Michelle Obama chose a military based theme and decorated the tree with medals, badges and patches.
In the year 2008, 370 decoration items were rejected, including a ball on which the words "impeach Bush" were written.
Best trees are selected from across the country, but highest number of official trees come from North Carolina.
