Though by definition painting is the process of applying paint/ pigment/ colour to a surface/ base, the end product of the act is also called a painting. Painters like Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Vincent Van Gogh, Leonardo- Da- Vinci, Michelangelo and Salvador Dali are amongst those who are famous for their art work. Each painter and his/ her work differ based on their concepts/ expressions or modes etc.
A number of museums around the globe display old and new paintings, some which are donated to them, other acquired by them themselves. There are also numerous collectors, curators, personal collectors, and art lovers in all parts of the world who engage in purchase and sale of paintings. There is a very active market for paintings where the art pieces are traded i.e. sold, bought and resold.
The painting titled “the Card Players” by Paul Cezanne painted in year 1892/93 is recorded to be one of the world’s most expensive painting ever sold. The painting was sold out for a price of $259 millions in April 2011.
