In UK bicyclers must follow the Highway Code (HC) to reduce the risk of accidents. There are other rules to follow like taking care when overtaking a car, as per section 67 of HC. According to Section 59 of HC, every bicycler must wear a helmet and wear fluorescent or light colored clothing for the visibility purpose.
Almost 17,000 casualties occur because of cycling in UK. Some facts to notice are that most of the accidents happen because of car opening in the cyclers path, no appropriate attire or lack of lights in the cycle and entering the main traffic dangerously.
There are cycle lanes which is recommended by section 62 of HC for a safer journey.
