The ratio of boys to girls in the world is alarming. The world ratio stands at 105:100 and in some countries, this ratio gets worse. China has a ratio of 120:100, while India has 109:100. However, in the US, women have benefitted in terms of salary hike. From 1970 to 2007, women have got a 44 percent hike in their salary and in comparison men have earned just 6 percent. According to statistics, by 2024, an average woman in the US will earn more than an average man. The rate of unemployment amongst women stands at 8 percent, while in men it is 8.8 percent. About 51.4 percent women hold the position of managers in the US.

Spending Habits of Men and Women
Men tend to spend their money on alcohol, automobiles, house repairs, eating out and gambling. In comparison, women spend their money on women’s and children’s clothes, food, education and childcare. Nearly 85 percent women resort to impulsive buying, but it is men who spend 15 percent more when it comes to credit card usage. Shoes are the most popular online purchase, with 49 percent women and 38 percent men buying their shoes online.

Women and Credit Card Management
A study conducted by FINRA Investment Education Foundation found that women are poor credit card managers compared to men. The study shows that 60 percent women compared to 55 percent are more likely to carry forward their credit card balance; 42 percent women pay the minimum balance for their credit cards compared to 38 percent men; 29 percent women pay late fees compared to 23 percent of men; and 16 percent women pay over-the-limit fee compared to 15 percent of men. Furthermore, the study also shows that women are less likely to do comparison shopping for their credit cards compared to men. If women are made financially literate, their credit card behaviors will improve 60 percent more compared to men’s behaviors.

Some famous and wealthy women in the US have no problem shelling out money on real estate. For instance, Oprah Winfrey’s home cost $550 million, while Jennifer Aniston spent $21 million for hers. There are other celebrities that spent less money on their homes, such as Stephenie Meyer, who paid just $819,000 for her Cave Creek home in Arizona, and Michele Bachmann, who bought her Minnesota home for $760,000.

Nearly 95 percent are more likely to get onto Google to find out more about a guy they have just met. 63 percent women have no qualms about making the first move; 35 percent women are conducive to taking a friend along in case the guy turns out to be creepy; and 49 percent women feel that men should choose an indoor location for a date as the weather can be unpredictable.

A Girl’s Life in a Developing Country
In developing countries, girls are severely discriminated. The birth of girl is not a joyous occasion; and girls are usually breastfeed for a shorter duration compared to boys. Girls in developing countries are not sent to school, as they have to stay home and look after their siblings and also help in household chores and field work. Teenage girls are expected to help in fields, but get less food and are undernourished. Nearly half of all girls become mothers before reaching their 18th birthday.

However, trends are changing for the better as more women are entering into the field of technology. Statistics reveal that between January 2011 and 2012, the number of women joining IT increased to 28.9 percent. Today, 55 percent of social media users are women.

The Effect of Sexual Violence on the Lives of Women and Girls
Statistics show that 70 percent women have had the misfortune of experiencing physical and/or sexual violence by an intimate partner. Around the world, 2 million women and children are kept as sexual slaves. In India, due to sex selection abortions, nearly half a million less girl babies are born every year. During wars, women are often raped, as seen recently in Congo, Darfur, Rwanda, Bosnia and Sierra Leone.
