
Recent survey has shown that people of USA are getting addicted to the prescribed drugs more than the illegal drugs. America saw an increase of 39% in prescribed drug usage between 1999 and 2009, the amount spent on them was $234 billion in 2008.
Moreover, there are ten times more deaths per year due to the over usage or adverse effects of well prescribed and administered drugs. 12 prescriptions filled by Americans each year.
Nearly 4.2 billion prescriptions were written in the US in 2011 alone. In 2012, 46% of American adults were reported to take prescription drugs and it also showed that 11.5% of American adults take 3 or more prescribed drugs.
What’s intriguing is 23% of American population aged between 18 to 24 are on a prescription drug. 12% of Americans aged 65 or more consume 4 pills a day. Every year the money spent on Prescription is on the up.
Between 2008 to 2012, the revenue for prescription drugs has risen to $325.7 which is directly benefiting the pharmaceutical companies of USA.
Americans are made to believe - by their doctors, by pharmaceutical industry that just about anything could be cured by a pill.
