
A protected area is an area which is protected due to its cultural, ecological or natural values. Protected areas are also termed as ‘Natural parks’ and these areas protect wildlife and natural vegetation etc from humans or any kind of alien interference.
There are many other protected areas in the world as well and some examples of these areas might include marine protected areas etc. At present there are about 161000 protected areas in the entire world and new are being added every other day.
Some of the protected areas in the world are larger than the others and the largest known protected area on the planet is the Northeast Greenland National Park in Greenland. This protected area spreads over 927000 sq km.
Another largest protected area in the world is the Chagos Marine protected area which spreads over an area of 545000 sq km.
Phoenix Islands protected area covers a total area of 408250 sq km and is thus among the list of the largest protected areas on the planet followed by Great Barrier reef marine park which spreads over 345400 sq km.
Some other large protected areas in the world are Kavango-Zambrezi Transfrontier conservation area, Galapagos marine reserve and Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park.
