The internet has made abundance of information available, gifted new platforms for communication and interaction. But, at the same time, studies show that the internet exposed its users to health risks such obesity, insomnia, and certain disorders. In 2010, The NewYork Times published an article saying ‘Obesity rates keep rising, troubling health officials’. And the Telegraph, in 2009, alleged the internet and social networking sites for being the prime reason causing obesity.
When it comes to the statistics, 25% of American’s time is spent in engaging in social networking sites. The rate of time spent in listening to music through iPads connected to online see increase by 434% from 2010 to 2011. The usage of FaceBook increased drastically from 2004 to 2011. On an average we sit 9.3 hours a day in watching videos or listening to online music.
However there is no correlation between increased internet and overall obesity rates. So, we can not say that the internet causes obesity.
