Internet Is Killing The Planet

internet is killing the planet

Although we cannot think of a world without Internet, there are some facts which might change our attitude slightly towards the usage of Internet. Do you know that in year 2000, there were only 250 million Internet users out of the 6 billion world population. In 2012, it went to 2 billion out of 7 billion population.

The 10.3 million data centers in US used 61 billion kWh energy in the year 2005, which could have powered the entire UK for 2 months. The good side of Internet is it gives the option of telecommuting. If 40% of US workers could telecommute just for 2 days, it would reduce the carbon emissions by 53 metric tonnes a year.

Who knew the words we search for in Google can emit CO2 that could hurt the planet. It is a fact that in a month Google produces 260,000 kg of CO2 and the process in it consumes 3.9 million kWh of energy. And the spam mail we send for fun can create 0.3 grams of CO2. The 62 trillion spam mails sent in a year can release CO2 equal to CO2 emissions of 1.6 million cars.
