Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI) are caused when hospitals and clinics carrying organisms in their air cause secondary and new infections in people who come there for treatment.
These are also known as nosocomial infections. reports suggest that a person has 5% of contacting HAI when admitted to a hospital. Every year 1.7 million people are affected by HAI when admitted to hospitals.
If contacted, HAI increase your stay in the hospital by at least a fortnight. About 98,000 people succumb to them every year. This is more than the deaths caused due to breast cancer and prostrate cancer.
It is said that the Department of Public Health spends 10% of its budget on treating HAI patients. This is about $35 billion per year.
