Most teens feel that being part of social media or being active online epitomizes how cool they are, but not many are aware of the risks that they could encounter in future because of the private information which they themselves have posted online. 95% of the teens aged between 12-17 use the internet, 81% of them are on social networking sites, while 75% of them own cell phones.
Serious problems encountered in recent times are related to safety and reports of sexual interaction between adults and minors on MySpace. 69% of teens regularly get personal messages online from people they do not know.
Putting pictures online can be stressful, especially, for girls. 28% girls edit photos of themselves before posting. Two-thirds of the teenagers have received sexual offers online, mostly teenage girls and 50% of the teenagers exchange emails and instant messages with someone they have never met.
40% teenagers admitted that they usually reply or chat with an unknown person online and only 14% teenagers meet people they chat with in person. 1 in 3 teens aged between 12-17 have reported online harassment. It is cool to be active online, but teens should be careful while exchanging information with strangers and report cyber bullying, if there is any.
