
Fosamax is a medicine which is given to osteoporosis patients. It was approved by the FDA in the year 1995, but now is effectiveness is being questioned in the recent studies. According to these studies, Fosamax causes brittle bones which may cause bone fractures, especially in women.
In 2003, it was the 19th most prescribed medicine in US, but FDA started getting complaints about this causing ONJ. The other serious side effects include esophagus problem, low blood calcium levels and unusual thigh bone fractures.
When studies were conducted on this specific drug which contains bisphosphonate, the results showed that it can make bones brittle. Hence, people are 3 times as likely to suffer from bone breakage.
