First time after two decades, the teachers of Chicago public schools have went on to strike and it was ended after 19 days. The main reason for the strike is to increase the salaries of teachers by 30% and provide 100% job security.
There are 472 elementary schools, 106 high schools, 96 charter schools and 7 contract schools in which 87% of the students are from low income families. More than 350,000 students were impacted due to strike and the total work force of CPS (Chicago public schools) is 40,678 of which 87% are females and 13% are male teachers.
Chicago public schools have agreed to hire 477 new teachers that reduced the burden for most of teachers and aids the students to attend classes for long hours. The school board and teachers union has implemented a new system that evaluates a teacher annually by giving score to rate the teaching standards.
