When you recycle, there's quite a bit that actually happens! The research team at OBerk has published this new infographic that visually shows the process of what actually happens when you recycle. This visualization shows the processes for paper, steel, glass, aluminum, and plastic, and they're all unique in their own ways. With steel, for example, the steel is initially crushed, baled, and then shipped off to foundries. From there, it's melted down and mixed with new steel to create new metal products. Lastly, the steel is recycled into various things like sheet metal, steel beams, cans, appliances, and automobile parts. According to this infographic, aluminum also has an interesting recycle process, as once its sorted, it is shredded and turned into chips. It's then melted down and poured into molds, which is then sent off to manufacturers where it's melted again, and rolled into sheets that can be cut, bent, and shaped into all new aluminum products like aluminum foil, license plates and cans.
