Dogs have been considered the best friends of mankind for a very very long time now. They are the most loyal and the most domesticated of all animals and have been used not just as guards but also as toys as well as for pastoral uses.
Europe has a number of dog breeds that are used mostly as for pastoral purposes but there are some that used as toys as well. While the Pomeranian and the Maltese are used as toy dogs, the Swedish Vallhund and the German Shepard are preferred mostly as pastoral dogs since they are apt at the work of keeping the cattle under control.
