After some visits of fishermen from the north and the discovery of the continent by Dutch explorers in 1606, the eastern half of Australia was claimed by the British in 1770 and initially populated by prisoners transported to the colony of New South Wales, founded in 1788.

The population grew steadily during the next years, while the continent was explored. When the nineteenth century arrived, five other large self-governing territories were established. In 1901, the six colonies became a federation and a country.
