"The number of women participating in sports has increased dramatically throughout the last century. Whereas in times gone past, it was not common for women to get involved in sports, now the numbers are practically equal. Unfortunately the opportunities for women to progress into professional leagues are not equal with men, as the sponsorship and revenue of professional women’s sport is still a fraction of what is invested in the mens games.
Australia has built up a reputation over the last century for producing some of the best sportswomen that the world has ever sen. Iconic swimmers like Dawn Fraser have inspired generations of young Australian girls to get active and involved in sport. Another sportswoman that has caused a significant impact on the Australian women’s sporting landscape was Cathy Freeman, whose gold medal performance in the women’s 400m at the 2000 Olympic games stopped Australia.
