Graphs are visual representation of numerical data and they are extremely significant in almost all fields of information. The impact of visual representation is far greater, making graphs one of the most studied areas of mathematics and information. For laymen, who are not accustomed to the numerical analysis of data, graphs provide immediate access and understanding which is crucial in conveying information, moving opinions, tracing changes and forecasting possibilities. There are many kinds of graphs and some of them are as follows:

  • Graphs can be simple like bar graphs, pie charts, histograms and line graphs. Such graphs have a wide utility and can be used to represent all kinds of data depending on the user’s specifications. They are elementary graphs which students are acquainted with from an early age.
  • Other kinds of graphs like cosmographs, scatter plots and so on are more specialized and are difficult to create. They are used to represent certain kinds of data which are technical and directed at people who are informed about them.
  • It is imperative to understand the different kinds of graphs, since this will lead to a greater depth in the science of creating graphs. Some graphs, like pictograms, have different applicability than others like bar graphs. Understanding the differences between the different types of graphs is important.
  • Organizational charts and flowcharts are again different types of graphs, which have specialized uses. These do not look like ordinary graphs but they too convey numerical data in the form of a chart, and hence they are referred to as graphs.
