The first ever captain of the Indian cricket test match captain was CK Nayadu under whose captainship, India played 4 matches from year 1932-1934. Nawab of Pataudi, Senior and Lala Amarnath were also two successful and popular captains for the Indian test match teams and reigned between 1946 and 1953.
Nawab of Pataudi, Junior was also a captain of the Indian test cricket team and under his captainship, India played 40 test matches of which they won 9 and lost 19. Some other successful Indian test cricket captains were Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Bishan Singh Bedi, Mohammad Azharuddin, Sachin Tendulkar, Saurav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

Under Sunil Gavaskar, India played 37 one day matches and won 14 out of them. Kapil Dev had a winning percentage of 54% while Ravi Shastri, Dilip Vengsarkar, Mohammad Azharuddin, Sachin Tendulkar, Saurav Ganguly, Ajay Jadeja and Rahul Dravid too did a good job with the one-day cricket Indian side. Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the current one-day international cricket captain and holds a good record.
As far as twenty-20 international cricket matches are concerned, only three captains have led India so far, namely: Virender Sehwag, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Suresh Raina.
