A national park is a park which has been made or used for the purpose of conservation. Most national parks are a reserve of semi-natural, natural or a developed piece of land and are a symbol of pride for a nation.
The Yellowstone National park in US was the first ever national park and was opened in 1872. There are a total of 6555 recognized national parks in the world and some of these are quite large as far as the land and water area is concerned. Northeast Greenland National park in Greenland is the largest national park in the world as it is spread over an area of 927000 sq km. covering an area of 345400 sq km; the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park is the second largest national park in the world and is situated in Australia.
Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park in Mozambique is another really large national park and takes over an area of 99800 sq km.
