Proteins are the building blocks of our body.
The recommended protein intake for a healthy adult is placed between 6 to 7 oz per day. However, the average American consumes more than double the required quantity. Most of this protein is derived from animal sources such as meat and milk, which has caused an imbalance in the ecosystem as well.
Excess consumption of meat has an adverse impact on our health by increasing the risk of premature death to as much as 20%. Too much animal protein puts extra load on the kidneys and leads to several problems. This also has adverse impact on water levels, fossil fuel emissions and soil erosion.
The solution to this problem is to go for a balanced diet and obtain proteins from vegetarian sources such as pulses, beans, tofu, nuts and peanut butter.
