Social networks, micro blogs and videos are the most popular digital activism applications in most regions of the world. Facebook, twitter and you tube are the most happening digital activism platforms.
Although digital technology can be used for both peaceful and violent purposes the vast majority of digital activism campaigns are non violent. In only 35% of campaigns did campaign initiators or participate cause physical injury to other people.
Despite frequent media coverage of hacking it is rare occurrence in digital activism campaigns. In only 2% of campaigns did initiators or participants infiltrate or manipulate digital hardware or software with destructive or distractive intent.
Campaigns that use digital tools and tactics often use offline tactics as well such as protests rallies and hunger strikes. 48% of the digital campaigns in this study also include an offline mobilation.
