A new study says, in America, most adults seem to have been indulging in criminal activities. Every year around 250,000 youth are tried, sentenced or imprisoned. Unfortunately, most adults are sent to jail without a judge's decision. And 95% of adults are charged with non-violent offenses.
While adults at the age of 7 are prosecuted in 23 states, 2 in 3 Americans stated setting a minimum age at which youth can be prosecuted in adult court. On any night, over 10,000 children are held in adult jails and prisons with more than 3 out of 4 awaiting trail.
When it comes to punishment, youth are often locked down 23 hours a day in smaller cells without natural light and educational opportunities. However, African-American youth are 9 times and Latino youth are 4 times more likely than White youth to receive an adult prison sentence for the same crime. It is interesting to note that these adults are denied employment, educational opportunities and even barred from receiving student financial aid.
